„Countdown to Durban : Towards a Climate Policy for the Most Vulnerable“
Thursday, 10 November 2011, 2.00 A.M. - 7.00 P.M.
Centre Monbijou, Berlin
As the climate summit in Durban , South Africa , is rapidly approaching, VENRO takes the opportunity to emphasise what is expected of international policy-makers, especially from the point of view of those who suffer most from the consequences of climate change.
For a large majority of people living in poverty and hunger in Africa, Latin America and Asia , containing the consequences of climate change and adapting to the changed climatic conditions are existential issues. This is why the most vulnerable people must stay in the focus of UN climate negotiations.
Last year in Cancún, the aim of limiting the global increase in temperature to less than two degrees Celsius in comparison to the pre-industrial level was adopted internationally for the first time. In Durban , therefore, substantial advances in the development of international legal parameters must be achieved in order to increase the dynamics of climate protection and the adaptation to climate change.
The conference will focus on the following issues:
Which advances must be achieved by the negotiations, especially in the field of adaptation?
How can the interests of the most vulnerable countries and their inhabitants be supported more efficiently?
How can climate negotiations be made more dynamic?
How can the funding of climate protection be promoted, especially in the field of adaptation?
How can ambitious climate goals be achieved and what are the consequences for the poorest countries?
The conference is an initiative of the VENRO Working Group on Climate and Development and is hosted in cooperation with the following member organizations:
