دانشگاه سازمان ملل به همراه هیات بین دول تغییر اقلیم، دفتر تغییر اقلیم و بهره وری انرژی استرالیا، دبیرخانه کنوانسیون تنوع زیستی و برنامه عمران ملل متحد کارگاه آموزشی با عنوان "تقلیل اثرات تغییر اقلیم با مردم بومی" در استرالیا برگزار خواهد کرد. زمان برگزاری این کارگاه 28-26 مارس 2012 می باشد.

United Nations University (UNU), in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) seek submissions for a workshop on “Climate Change Mitigation with Indigenous Peoples: Practices, Lessons Learned and Prospects.”

The workshop aims to reflect the wide and diverse range of perspectives concerning indigenous peoples, local communities and climate change responses (including mitigation); support the build-up of understanding and peer-reviewed literature and to compile regional and local data and grey literature that are relevant for understanding climate change mitigation at the local level. It will also support indigenous peoples, local communities and developing country scientists’ engagement and research in international climate dialogues.  The workshop also intends to provide policy-makers withinformation on mitigation issues relevant for indigenous peoples and local communities. Selected papers will be published in a Special Issue of a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The workshop will be held from 26-28 March 2012 in Cairns, Australia and is the second workshop of the series. The first workshop on Adaptation and Vulernability was held in Mexico City in July 2011.

Planned sub-topics being considered include:

  • Mitigation Policies and Indigenous Peoples (potentials, barriers, opportunities and implementation);
  • Forestry Mitigation Options (including REDD+);
  • Indigenous Peoples and Carbon Sink Enhancement;
  • Biomass Burning, Fire Management and Indigenous Peoples
  • Indigenous Peoples, Renewable Energy and Technology
  • Traditional Agriculture
  • Blue carbon;
  • Governance for Mitigation;
  • Submissions on other relevant topics are also welcomed.

Submissions should be relevant to the workshop theme – Climate Change Mitigation – and should contribute specific knowledge and practices of indigenous peoples/local communities about climate change mitigation. Submissions should either be based on field data and/or knowledge that comes from the communities of interest, or concern a comprehensive literature review on a specific topic relevant to the theme.

Submissions will be reviewed by an international panel of experts. The workshop will be held in English. However, subject to demand and availability of funds, French and/or Spanish translation may also be provided. A limited number of travel grants will be made available for selected participants.
